My Last IF/Christmas Piano Recital 2011010

For my Christmas Piano Recital this year, we held it at a rest home in Idaho Falls. It went well, even if we were a little bit rushed, since it was at the beginning of the month. I also invited my neighbor and friend, Stacy's guitar students to perform as well. It was nice to have a little variety. I don't know why I never thought of including her before. I had to really hold in my emotions with this one, because it was my last recital before we moved back to AZ. I am really going to miss teaching these kids that I've grown to love so much. I am very proud of their accomplishments. I really hope that they continue with the piano.

This year Kolby went as an army guy and Mallorie was a queen. We could not call her a princess, though, because she is, "too old for princess stuff now." (Where does the time go?) I couldn't believe how nice these costumes were. We found them at TJ Maxx, and for the price, they were really impressive. My mom was glad that she didn't have to sew anything for them this year too.

After going to PA and staying in NC at Taryn's house for a few days, we went to see Jeremy's brother, Josh in Columbia. We also went to Charleston and went to the beach. We took a ferry to Ft. Sumter also.

We went to Lancaster County this summer with my parents, Taryn, her kids, and Kolby and Mallorie. We stayed in a little bed and breakfast there and got to go on a buggy ride. We also shopped, tried homemade rootbeer (eww!) and had dinner with an Amish family in their home. That was probably my favorite part. The food was delicious, and the family was so nice. At the end of our meal, the mother and her two daughters sang us a few hymns. It was a really amazing experience. I've read many Amish novels, so I'd been hoping to visit. While there, I felt as though I were in another world, or time. Especially when I'd hear the clip-clop of the horses pulling the buggies. It was quite an experience. I wasn't disappointed and would even love to go back sometime.

I guess this is the only picture I got of Hershey, PA. They had cute street lights that were shaped like Kisses, which I meant to take a picture of, but apparently I forgot. From Lancaster, we drove to Hershey and did the chocolate factory tour. I now have my Masters in chocolate tasting.
There were many farms that had these birdhouses. The Amish want the birds around to eat the flies.
I love all of the old farms.

Our young women had a family photo shoot at Freeman Park to raise money for girl's camp.

I thought there were some really nice shots and it was a really good deal too. These are the first half of those pictures.

I wish that I knew how to crop out the leg and girl in the background in this one, but still cute.

It took some convincing to get Mallorie to show her teeth when she smiled. She didn't want to show her missing teeth, but I love the snaggle-tooth look. It's such a cute age.

Guess who had a baptism?

We were able to have the baptism in Colorado since the family was there for the funeral. It was such a nice baptism and I was so grateful that my family was able to be there. It really was very special and I feel that it helped us as a family to end the trip on a happier note.

My Papa

My Grandpa passed away on the 22nd of March. He was almost 82 years old. My Papa wasn't in the best of health, but he was still very independent, and liked to travel, despite his disease. For a while now he has had to deal with his muscles weakening with the myasthenia gravis, which is a neuromuscular disease. So, everytime I would say goodbye to him, after visiting him, I'd make sure to give him an extra long hug, and tell him that I loved him. I was always worried that this might be the last time I'd get to see him.
My Papa was a great man. He was a little ornery, but I loved him and I knew he loved me. When we were kids, he used to bring us donuts on Saturday mornings. He wouldn't ring the doorbell, he'd just leave them there as a surprise. Then when we woke up, it was like Christmas morning. We would run to the door and find our donut surprise waiting on our front step.
Once, I got to go with him to Dunkin Donuts to pick out our dozen. When he had a house in Phx he would go for morning walks, and so once, he walked over to our house and I walked back with him to his house. Then we got into his truck and headed out. I remember when he used to chew skoll, he would smell of Peppermint. His truck smelled of it too, and it reminded me of the scene in The Parent Trap, when Hayley Mills relishes the smell of her grandpa. Kodi used to collect his empty Skoll cans so she could smell him too. At the time we thought it was a little weird, but I do still think of him when I smell peppermint, and I kind of get it. That day I felt so special picking out the donuts. I don't know if my other brothers or sisters ever had that opportunity or not, but I felt like I was in on the secret, and it was so fun
As a kid, I would spend Summers in Colorado with my Granny and Papa. It was always so much fun. He would take me around on the four-wheeler and he never went too fast because he knew I was afraid. I was kind of a wimp. My Granny and I would cook dinner with fresh ingredients out of the garden, usually, and I can remember setting the table and writing notes on their napkins. After dinner we would watch Wheel of Fortune and make popcorn. Even until his last day he still never missed a show.
I think that is why I love that game show so much too.
He was a triplet, so I think he was very proud to have great-grandkids that were twins. I remember when he came to the NICU to see Kolby and Mallorie. It really meant a lot to me. Kolby and Mal loved their White-haired Papa very much too. We will really miss seeing him. When we go to Colorado it will just not be the same, but I know he is in a better place with his loved ones, and that we will get to see him again someday.

Perry McDonald
Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident Perry McDonald will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 1, at the Cortez Elks Lodge. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery.

Visitation has been scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at Ertel Memorial Chapel.

Perry passed away from injuries sustained in an auto accident that occurred March 22, 2011. After fighting to survive, he peacefully slipped away on March 24, with a smile on his face, and his loved ones by his side.

Perry was born to Dollie and Floyd McDonald, on May 5, 1929, in Grady County, Okla. Triplets, Perry, Jerry and Derry were a great surprise to his parents and 10 year old sister. He spent his childhood in Oklahoma. After graduating from high school, Perry married Bonnie Nevius in June 1948. They had two children, Terri and Steve.

Perry began his career operating heavy equipment for Simms Construction. He became a supervisor for the company in his early twenties, and was transferred to Farmington, N.M. He moved to Cortez in 1958, and loved Colorado. When the company wanted to transfer him back to Oklahoma, he decided to start his own oil field construction company in the Four Corners area.

In 1981 he sold Perry McDonald Construction, and retired. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling. Perry owned a winter home in Arizona and later spent winters in California. While traveling around the United States in his fifth-wheel travel trailer, Alaska was one of his favorite places to visit. At one time, Perry owned several collector cars, and he especially liked to restore 1940 Ford coupes. Perry was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and a lifetime member of the Elks lodge, as well as a Shriner. Perry also served on the board of directors at First National Bank.

Perry will be greatly missed by his friends and family. He leaves behind his triplet brother, Jerry of Texas; his sister, Harriet Neill of Oklahoma; his daughter, Terri Higgins and husband Myrle of Arizona; his son, Steve and wife Judi of Cortez; eight grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Preceding Perry in death were his parents; his brother, Glen; and his triplet brother, Derry.

The Valley of the Sun

In March we went to Phoenix. Jeremy's dad was graduating from A.T. Still University with his doctorate, so we went to see him walk. The kids had to miss school, but by the time we reached Salt Lake Mallorie had all of her homework done (for the week). So I figured, how much was it really going to hurt them, anyway? It was so nice to get away from the snow, and enjoy some sunshine. I really miss the sunshine, especially this time of year. I feel like it gave me a boost after a long and dark winter. While there, we went swimming (in a heated pool, it was still a little cool for swimming), shopping, and hiking several times. It was just so wonderful not to worry about a coat, and so wonderful being able to spend time outside. I guess I would feel better about the cold if I were into snowmobiling or skiing, or something. It's just hard because ID is such a contrast from AZ. The weather makes me feel trapped. Some days I feel like I'm seriously suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder. Maybe I should go on anti-depressants. Either that, or get a tanning bed. Anyhow, we had a really good time. While there, I also had lunch with my good friends Susan and Candy, who are like a second family to me. It was great getting to see them and catch up! It's been too long. Spending time with the family was also really fun. I miss everybody so much. These were some of the pictures from the hike. Growing up I never really thought that Phoenix was a pretty place with all of the brown dirt and cactus, but now I guess I have a greater appreciation for a sky that is actually blue and a bright sunny day. Phoenix is also a pretty clean city and you have to admit the lakes look kind of pretty too, even if they are man-made and probably filled with sewage water.

This is what was left of our igloo that Jeremy built. I meant to take a picture of it after he first built it, but didn't get around to it until this was all that remained. It lasted quite a while, and the kids and neighbors had a good time playing in it. Now it is completely gone, along with most of the snow. Now if it would just not snow anymore. I'm ready for some warmth!

We had a terrific Christmas this year. Sledding was very fun, and sharing our Christmas Eve dinner with the Potters was great. After dinner we played the Mexican Train game (Mexican Dominoes) while Kade and the kids played Uno and watched 'Elf." Afterwards we watched a church nativity video, said prayers, and got ready for bed. The kids put out lettuce for the reindeer this year. I wasn't sure if reindeer would like lettuce, but I was all out of carrots. Kolby tried getting up at 1:45 this year. He came into my room, after I had just fell asleep and announced that Santa had came. I told him to go back to bed. We spent Christmas day playing Mallorie's 'Wheel of Fortune' game on the Wii, putting together Legos and then we went to look at Christmas lights that night and to eat at IHOP, which isn't my favorite, but it was all that was open. I also got new couches for Christmas, which I was really surprised to get. They are soooo nice. Hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas as well.

Sledding On Christmas Eve

We took the kids sledding at the park on Christmas Eve. The snow wasn't very good for sledding. We've had so much rain, and it wasn't soft. It was difficult climbing up a hill of slippery ice. Mallorie tipped going down and scraped her face up pretty good against the icy snow, and now she looks like she has blush on one of her cheeks. Reminded me of "The Other Sister" movie where she only gets a makeover for half of her face. I need to add some blush to the other side, I guess. There were some pretty good jumps on a couple of the hills. Jeremy broke our sled on one of them. He flew pretty far, and came down hard, breaking it. He's a little sore now.

I took these pictures of the kids at the park for our Christmas card. I thought they turned out okay. I wish I had a better camera, and that I knew more about photography. I debated about even sending out cards this year, since it was nearly Christmas already, but ultimately decided I'd just take some pictures myself. I'll probably have the kids pictures taken (professionally) in March for their baptism pictures.

Last night was my Christmas Piano Recital. It went very well and all of my students played their pieces so nicely. I'm extremely proud of all of their hard work. At the same time I'm glad it is done, and I don't have to stress anymore over it. I always worry about how well they will play, yet they never let me down.

Christmas 2010 Dance Recital

Friday night was Mallorie's dance recital. She did very well. This year she had two routines, and they were one right after another. We had to change her costume literally on the side of the stage really, really quick. It was pretty funny, but we did it. I'm glad that I had Tricia there to help me out with tying her shoes and stuff. My favorite costume was her jazz one. It's the pink and black one. That dance was to 'Roxy Heart' from the movie 'Chicago.' The dances were really good this year. Her hip-hop one was 'Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf.' Thanks to Natalie for being such a great teacher. Natalie even had an extra practice at her house before the show Friday afternoon, so Mal, Reagan, and Kelani knew their dance better than all of the other girls. Mallorie came home from practice so excited and you could tell her little self esteem had been boosted. She said, "Mom, Natalie screamed because we did sooo good at our dance." I'm so happy that she enjoys dancing so much.

My sister Kilee, Dusty, and their girls came to visit us the first part of November. Kilee's good friend, Jessa was getting married in the Rexburg temple, so they came for that. It was fun to spend time with them. Kilee's girls had never played in the snow before so it was great to watch their reactions. Storie loved it. She kept eating it. Kora, however was a little unsure about it. The first time Kora reached down to touch the snow, she started freaking out because it was cold on her bare hand. She ran over to me with her hand raised so that I could wipe the snow off. It was pretty funny.

Mallorie Lost a Tooth

Mallorie just lost her first tooth in November. I believe she and Kolby were the last kids in the 2nd grade with all of their baby teeth still (and Kolby still doesn't even have one that is the least little bit loose). Mallorie was so excited to lose her first tooth, that she'd ask me to wiggle it at least every 20 minutes to see if it was "wigglier" than before. When it was finally loose enough, she let Jeremy tie the little tooth to the front door with dental floss. Jeremy was a little scared to do the job, but she was so brave. When Jeremy very apprehensively slammed the door shut, the tooth went flying and we couldn't find it. We looked around on the floor with flashlights for nearly 30 minutes, but never did find it. I felt bad for her that we had lost it, especially since this was her first one. Later that night, however I spotted a little white thing on the area rug in front of the couch. I had just vacuumed earlier that day, so I knew the rug shouldn't have any crumbs or fuzz on it. Sure enough it was the tooth. It is quite a distance from the front door to the rug in front of the couch. We didn't even look over there because we never thought it would have flown so far. The tooth fairy brought her money that night, and she said she was going to save it to buy a Christmas present for her brother. She has another tooth that is loose too now, but she is not nearly as excited to lose it. She hasn't been wiggling it hardly at all.

We took the kids to Mesa Verde for the first time. They enjoyed learning about the Pueblo Indians and becoming Junior Park Rangers. It was a bit difficult for the kids to hike back up, though. Apparently my kids have no muscle in their legs. Jeremy actually had to carry Kolby and Mallorie up for the last half. For school we had been learning all about the different tribes, and famous Indians like Pocohantas, so this was their first field trip. I've always been fascinated by these ancient dwellings, and over the years I've wondered why on earth people would live on the edge of cliffs, and climb up to the top of the mesas to farm. It seems like a dangerous place and way to live.

The Train to Silverton

So it's been a little while since I've posted anything new. We haven't had the internet for a while. Since we thought we were going to be moving and because we also needed a new wireless router, we just went ahead and cancelled our internet. I've been going crazy without it all this time! Now that we have internet again, I have some catching up to do. We went to our Higgins family reunion back in July and Kolby got to ride on the Silverton with his cousin Trevor and my younger brother and his wife. There was a mudslide the previous night, however, so the train did not actually go all the way to Silverton. We were going to drive up to Silverton (in the car) and meet them to switch places so that Mallorie, Jeremy, and I could ride the train back to Durango, but because of the slide, we were not able to. So I still have not been to Silverton. Maybe another time. They said it was really warm on the train without any air conditioning anyway, so maybe in the Fall it would be a better time to go. We have rode the train once before. It wasn't very far, but when the kids were just little, we took this same train for the Polar Express.

Jeremy and Thayne tiled our hallway a while ago. It turned out so nice, and I'm really glad that someone else will get to enjoy it since we're moving! At least Jeremy now has a new skill. He's so handy.

Mallorie's New Glasses

We had to get glasses for Mallorie. We knew that she couldn't see the board at school and had noticed that she sat right in front of the TV at home in order to see. On our trip to AZ, there were some horses in a field and she thought they were cows. It was pretty funny. She was really excited to get the glasses, but then she started to get a little scared to wear them to school. She said that the kids would laugh at her, or wouldn't like her anymore. I told her that they love her now, and that getting glasses wouldn't change anything, and that they wouldn't laugh, but if they did I'd come to school and beat them up. Luckily everyone told her how cute they were and that she looked older and smarter, which she loved.

Wildlife World Zoo at Spring Break

While we were in AZ for Spring Break we went to the Wildlife World Zoo. It is a nice zoo, and they have added many new rides and exhibits since the last time we went, which was when the kids were about two. We rode the carousel and the train ride. Mallorie really wanted to ride on the log ride, but Kolby didn't (I think he's got a bit of his mother in him) and we were all too hungry by then so we decided to go eat instead. It looked like a really cool ride, though. It goes under the aquarium and then takes you up high before plunging down to the bottom at the end. We had dinner in the new restaurant, which has an aquarium with sharks swimming next to you while you eat. We got to touch sting rays and we also saw shark eggs. Did you know that some species of sharks lay eggs?! Me neither. It was fascinating. You could see the little developing sharks moving around inside the sack like eggs. My little sister, Kilee and her daughter, Storie - This was the first time Storie had ever rode on a carousel. She wasn't sure about it at first, but then loved it and wanted to go on it again. In fact we almost lost her there. We had all walked off, and then discovered that Storie wasn't with us. She had gone back to the carousel and was insisting that she ride it again on the doggie.

This is the first book in this series and it was SO good. I'm almost finished with the second one now, and the third one comes out in August I believe. I heard they're making these into a movie too. I can't wait! I haven't found such a good read since the Twilight series and The Brothers. I just can't put it down.

We had Mallorie's party this afternoon at the bowling alley. I decided that we'd try having two different parties this year instead of one combined party for both she and Kolby, so his will be next Saturday. I think I preferred it this way. It was nice not having 20 kids all at once all hyped up on sugar. It was a busy (but good) day today, beginning at 9AM, we were at the pool for their field trip. Next I had 30 minutes to run by Walmart to get treats for their class. The kids don't like cupcakes, so I had to get Kolby's class donuts, and Mal's class got ice cream sandwiches. After that I got McDonald's for them and had lunch at the school with them. Then had treats in the two different classes after their recess. I had a couple of hours at home to wrap presents, do some laundry, load up the car, and then we were off to the party.

My parents were here in town recently, and my mom and I went to see this movie. It was a really good movie, and oh, my, I have a new man (sorry Jeremy)! Channing Tatum is a hottie! Nicholas Sparks never fails to write a great story. He wrote "The Notebook," which is another one of my favorite movies. I hadn't read "Dear John" before seeing this, so this ending actually surprised me. Now I think I'll have to read the book, and I wouldn't mind seeing this movie again too if anyone wants to go. Also, the song I've got on my playlist is in the movie.

We'll Miss You Uncle Mike

My Uncle Mike passed away last Sunday. I really wish that I could've gone to the funeral. I will miss him, but it is comforting to me knowing that he is again with my Aunt Suzie. I don't ever remember my uncle without a smile on his face, and his laugh and smile was almost contagious. He lived in Colorado on the adjoining property to my grandma, so when I'd spend Summers up there, growing up. I would see a lot of Uncle Mike. He would be working in their garden most of the time. In the latter years of his life, he had alzheimer's, and that was very sad, because he wasn't the same. He had a stroke a little while ago, though, and he remembered everything again after the stroke. He had said after the stroke that he was ready to go and that he couldn't wait to see my aunt. I'm sure she is happy to be with him again too.

Christmas in AZ '09

Christmas was great this year. It was so nice to be home. I loved the weather so much, and so did the kids. Anytime we went out, Kolby would say, "Ahhhh, Arizona is just right," and I think I would have to agree. It was wonderful being able to go outside without bundling up, or even bare-foot if you wanted to. We got to see my Papa, from Colorado, my brother Kevin, his wife, Helen, and daughter, Anabeth (finally), from California. We also got to see my cousin, Jeff, his wife, Tracy, and their daughter, Alex. For Christmas dinner, my mom's cousin, Kay and her husband came over, as well as my mom's Aunt Harriett from Oklahoma. Of course, my youngest brother, Phillip, and youngest sister, Kilee were there with their families too. It was really fun spending time with them and all of the little ones. We did LOTS of shopping and eating at all of my favorite restaurants. We also had our family pictures done. The kids saw "The Chipmunks" and "The Princess and the Frog," and I got to see a few movies too. I think my favorite one was "The Blindside." Weather was good for the drive home, and the kids had their new DS's to play, so that kept them entertained. I really wasn't ready to come home to the cold yet, but it was time to get back to the real world, I guess. I had a dream last night that we moved back to AZ. I even dreamed about my new house's floorplan and everything. We had a pool too. Wonder what that means....

1st Annual Christmas Recital

Before we left for Phoenix, I had my first Christmas piano recital, and it was a success. I felt as though the recital went really fast. I guess when four of the nine, played such short pieces, it's not going to take much time. I was very pleased with all of my students performances. Whenever I hear them play, I can't help but feel amazed and proud at how well they are playing. I'm not sure how much of that is because of my influence, or if they are good just because they are all so bright and talented. Whichever it is, I'm just glad to be a part of the learning process, and I'm glad that they are excited about music too. I really do enjoy teaching, and these are all really good kids. In this picture are nine of my students. I have two more, but they were not able to attend that night, and Ellie, sadly has moved to UT now, so we will miss her. Hopefully she will continue with the piano there.

Thursday night we went to Blackfoot for a wedding reception. Megan, who I have not seen in over 6 years just got married in the Idaho Falls temple. Megan was one of my Beehives back in Arizona. It was so fun getting to see her. I'm really glad she found me on Facebook. How funny it is that her family moved to ID after we did. I also got to see Allison, one of my other Beehives. She was a bridesmaid and is now taller than me (not that that is hard to believe) and beautiful as well. I can't believe that Megan's married! It makes me feel very old. She looked absolutely beautiful, and her husband seems like a really good guy. I'm so proud of her and the decisions she's made with her life. She and her husband will be living in New Zealand, where he is from. I wish them lots of happiness.

Kolby has a couple of real super-hero capes, but he still seems to prefer the good 'ol blankie tied around his neck. (Love Mallorie in the background chilling on the couch.)

We are going to Arizona for Christmas. Wooowhoooo!!! I can't wait. When we told Mallorie that we were going, she was so excited that she asked if she could start packing. Every day since, she has asked too. For Thanksgiving Kolby made a placemat at school, and Mallorie didn't get to. So, she has decided to make Christmas ones for everyone in the family. So far she has only made two. The circle is where the plate goes. I knew she had been working on these, but the other day I found something else she had made. (scroll down)

She made a list of all of the people she needs to make placemats for. She has 11 big people listed and then little people too. She's checked off the two that she's already done. I don't know.... is this a sign of OCD?

Yes, it's December, and I'm just now posting these Halloween pictures. I've been pretty bad lately about updating. Piano lessons and volunteering at the school have really kept me busy. I have eleven students now, and I'm getting ready for our Christmas recital in a few weeks. Thanksgiving was fun. This year we celebrated Thanksgiving with our next door neighbors, and their family. My parents went on a cruise with my older sister, Taryn and her family for the holiday. So, luckily Tricia invited us to spend it with them. It was nice being around another family, even if it wasn't my family. At least it had a familiar feeling to it all, and I wasn't quite so homesick. This year I went shopping for the first time ever on Black Friday. Tricia, her sister-in-law, and I, the bargain shoppers that we are, were up at the crack of dawn, and in line at Wal-Mart by 3AM. I'm happy to say that I got the two items I needed and got a great deal. That's really all I bought, but it was fun checking out the other deals and seeing people go crazy. After we were done with our shopping, we went to breakfast, then headed home to take a long winters nap. I had such a good time, I may have to do this again next year.

Count Kolby and Mallorie the bride - My Mom sewed Mal's dress. It's hard to see the details because she wore a long-sleeved shirt under it, but it was really pretty.

This year we had a total of six kids at the party. I was watching three extras for a friend who went to UT, and also Ryan, from across the street. They were all very good and had a great time. I thought they all looked very cute as well. After they went down the line of cars at the Trunk-Or-Treat 4 or 5 times, we went home read Halloween stories and watched a Halloween cartoon. It was a fun night.

Spirit Week

This week at school was spirit week. Kolby and Mal had lots of fun dressing up like rock-stars and wounded kids for fake an injury day. I didn't get a picture of them on rock-star day, but I did Kolby's hair in a faux hawk. It looked so cool, and I really wish that I had taken a picture of it. Mallorie was Hannah Montana. Kolby had already taken off his bandages by the time he got home from school on injury day, so I didn't get a picture of that either. But, Mallorie kept hers on and didn't want to miss out on an opportunity to pose for the camera. I was busy this week with preparations for Family Fun Night. It was Weds. night along with the Book Fair, and I think it was a success. I did an International Night. We had over 200 people at the school, and it seemed to run very smoothly. I had estimated the right amount of food, except for the horchatas. I think we'll be drinking horchata for the next 50 years and I don't really even like the stuff!! Besides horchatas, we had nachos (Mexico), rice (Japan), and pineapple (Hawaii). I'm glad that it went well, but mostly I'm glad to have it over with.

My bitty brother, Phillip, Christtina, Trevor, and Cole came to visit us for a few days, and we got to go to Mesa Falls and Yellowstone again. We had a great time, I just wish that they could have stayed a little longer. We took Trevor to feed the ducks at the green belt one day. Phillip and Jeremy went golfing. We went shopping, and we got to eat at Bubba's and had Reed's Dairy. Christtina was hooked on huckleberry ice cream. We also ate at Big Judd's after Yellowstone. She and I tried to share the Big Judd special, which is 2 pounds of hamburger. We maybe ate 1/3 of it each. It was huge! I feel sick thinking about it. It was so fun getting to spend time with them, and also getting to see my new nephew, Cole. He is such a cutie! He is a very happy baby, always smiling. I also enjoyed their dog. I think I need to get one. Now that I'm home alone during the day, I feel like an empty-nester. I need a dog to keep me company. I should probably get a job, or go back to school, or something.

Mallorie was so excited for school to start, that she laid out her outfit (complete with lunchbox, backpack, shoes, and headband) three days in advance. As it turned out it was rainy, so she had to wear something a little warmer for the first day.

Old Faithful/Mesa Falls trip #1

The first part of August, my sister-in-law and her friend Ali came out for a visit from Missouri. We had such a good time. While they were here, we did a TON of shopping. We also went to Mesa Falls for a picnic one day and then to Yellowstone the next. We about froze our behinds off at Mesa Falls. It was very rainy there, but really beautiful. The girls were reading "New Moon" and "Breaking Dawn" while we drove, and we decided it was perfect Edward weather. There was even fog coming off of the water fall. After Mesa Falls, we stopped in Rexburg for delicious Cocoa Bean cupcakes. They are the best! In West Yellowstone there was a little cafe that I had to snap a picture of for all of those Jacob fans out there. Jessi did not like Jacob in the books. Ali and I kept telling her that she'd start to like him more as she read. We found a really funny shirt that said, "I'd like to La Push Jacob Black off of a cliff. Edward Cullen forever!" We said it would be perfect for her. We didn't see any bears in Yellowstone, even though Ali said, "according to Emmett, this time of year is usually pretty good for bear hunting. But Spring is Emmett's favorite hunting season because they are still grouchy after coming out of hibernation."

For the 4th we went to Cortez. My sister came out from NC as well as my parents. It was fun seeing them and my Grandpa as well. My Grandpa fell just before we got there and hurt his arm really bad. I helped bandage it up a few times, and it was really gross! I worry about him a lot, being there all by himself, but I was glad that we could be there to help him out. I love Colorado so much. I used to spend summers there staying with my Grandma. I sure do miss her whenever I go up there. It's great to visit, but it just isn't the same. While we were there we went white-water rafting in Durango and to see the fireworks. It was a quick trip, but very fun.

Britton Family Reunion 2009

In June we went to Missouri for ten days for our family reunion. We originally did not think that Jeremy was going to be able to get any time off from work, so it was just me and the kids for the first few days. The kids and I flew into St. Louis, and we spent a couple of days there with Jeremy's family. It was soooo humid!! I guess I've forgotten how humid the weather can be there in the summer. We went to the St. Louis Zoo Saturday. Every time we passed a fountain or waterfall (any water feature really), the kids would get in the water every chance they could to cool off. Apparently I didn't get any pictures from the zoo, but it was a very nice zoo. Sunday was Father's Day and we went to church. Jeremy's cousin, Ben was being ordained to the office of Elder, so we got to be there for that. After church we took some family pictures (without Jeremy) and then went to Jeremy's aunt's house for some great food. Jeremy's Grandpa has a BBQ restaurant, and I love his food. After we left St. Louis, we went to Branson and stayed in a REALLY nice resort. Jeremy's sister, Jessi works for the Marriott, so we got three rooms there. Each room room had two bedrooms, a full kitchen, family room area, and even laundry room. While we were in Branson we swam at the resort nearly every day. We also went boating at the lake and went to one of the shows in town. The show was the Liverpool Legends. They were pretty good, and sounded just like the Beatles. Finally we went back to Jeremy's parents house and Jeremy got to come out. The kids had fun playing with all of their cousins. It was great to get to see Tucker and Maddi, whom we hadn't even met yet. They are so cute! Maddi had her 1st b-day while we were there too. So we had a little party for her one night. We also went to Silver Dollar City, which is this great amusement park in Branson. Mallorie even went on this huge roller coaster that goes from 0-70 in 3 seconds or something like that. I guess my girl's a lot braver than me. It was a really fun trip, and it was great to see all of the family, who we love and miss so much.

One Proud Piano Teacher

In May I had my first piano recital for my students. As you can see, I only have a few. (I do have a few openings, if anyone is interested.) One of my students, Garrett could not make it that night unfortunately. He would have been great if he had been there, I'm sure. The other four did a terrific job! We are so proud of Mallorie. She had her dance recital the other night and she did so well. She knew all her dance steps, and I think she enjoys performing a little bit too. Grandma and Papa came from AZ for a visit and to see the recital. My dad had a good time playing the Wii, bowling and golf mostly. I don't think he had ever played before. After they left to go back home, his shoulder was even sore from playing so much! My mom and I had fun shopping for watches and I also introduced her to Bajios. She loved their salads and the mango salsa. We also let the kids ditch school one day so that we could go to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. It was so much fun, and I'm really glad that we got to go. I had never been to Old Faithful, and it was amazing! I'm also really glad that my parents were able to come out when the weather was nice.

We had a wonderful time in AZ. It was great seeing friends and family, and the weather was so terrific that we weren't really ready to come home. You would think that a week is long enough, but it just isn't long enough to see everyone and do all that you want. While we were there, Kilee's friend took some pictures of the kids out in the desert. I thought they turned out pretty cute. I just wish that we could have had more smiles. I think Kolby and Mal were really tired, though. Apparently we wore them out with all of the fun we had.

It's Birthday Time!

We just had Kolby and Mallorie's birthday party. Kolby wanted a Star Wars theme, and Mal wanted Barbie.

My youngest sister, Kilee just had her baby. Her name is Kora, and she was born last week. She weighed 10 lb. 6 oz.! Can you believe those chubby little cheeks. I can't wait to snuggle her up. Kilee was considering the name Mabel for her. I'm really glad they went with Kora, though.

Easy Bake Lovin'

Since everyone's been bugging me to put some pictures up. Here's one of the latest. The kids have really enjoyed the Easy Bake Oven (and the aprons) Kolby has decided he wants to add chef to the lengthy list of his future jobs. Currently he wants to be a dentist, soccer player, fireman, rock-climber, and now, a chef. Mallorie's list is pretty long too. She wants to be a dancer, cheerleader, dentist, and vet. I'm glad they have so many dreams. I'm personally hoping that one of them ends ups a dentist. Then they could fix my teeth. Ha!

4 AM Christmas Morning!

Christmas day started early for us at our house this year. Kolby and Mallorie woke us up at 4 AM! Kolby's first words were, "Mom, Santa didn't leave me a lump of coal. I must have been good!" I guess he must have really been worried. We opened presents and then went back to bed at about 5:30. Mal Mal got an Easy Bake Oven and a Tini Puppini (dog that wears clothes and bling) from Santa, and Kolby got a Game Boy and Road Ripper (monster truck). The kids watched Wall -E twice, which I'm not sure why. I didn't think it was THAT good. Later we went over to the Sutherlands for some amazing turkey, stuffing, ham, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, and all the fixins'. Eric is such a good cook! They got a Wii, so the kids played that while Staci and I watched Mamma Mia. It was a lot of fun.

The First Time Sledding

We had such a good time sledding on Christmas Eve, that I think it should be a new tradition. Kolby and Mal loved it, and weren't the least bit scared. They even went off some big jumps and crashed, but they laughed so hard when it happened, and then immediately wanted to do it again. Afterwards we went back home and opened their Christmas pajamas, and changed into those, then ate our Christmas Eve, candlelight dinner, and read scriptures. Although, we longed for our family this year, it was very relaxing, and low-key. We tried to keep things very simple this year, and not go overboard. It seems like we always over do it. But, this year was so peaceful and Jeremy seemed to agree too that we felt closer to the true meaning of Christmas this year by keeping it simple.

Kindergarten Class Christmas Party

Here are some of the pictures I took from Kolby and Mal's class party. The kids made two ornaments and played a couple of games. For treats they had raspberry sorbet and 7-up with a candy cane in it. I forgot to get a picture of Mrs. Raish. I'll have to remember to do that at the Valentine's Day party. All of the kids seemed to have a really good time. One boy in the class, even said that this was the best day of his life.

Amish Sugar Cookies

Laurel's Amish Sugar Cookies

1 - 1/2 C. Butter (3 sticks)

1 - 1/2 C. Sugar

1 C. sour cream

3 eggs

6 C. Flour

1/2 t. soda

1 t. baking powder

1/4 t. salt

1 - 1/2 t. vanilla

Cream butter & sugar, add sour cream in which you have mixed the soda. Add eggs & beat. Add flour, baking powder & salt. Mix well. Add vanilla and chill overnight.

Roll out 1/2" thick. Bake at 350 for about 7 min. (For best results do not overcook) or until light brown on bottom. Frost and enjoy!

We had a good time making cookies for Santa. This recipe made a TON of cookies and they were really good. Mal had a good time making her gingerbread women anatomically correct. It was all her idea. We decided, however that we would not be leaving those ones for the man in red.

I know I haven't updated in a while, but it's been really, really busy lately. So, now I'll catch up. My birthday has come and gone, and I had a really nice one. My friends took me out for breakfast Saturday morning and then Jeremy made me dinner AND dessert (from scratch)! This is a picture of what my mom got for me this year. It's my favorite gift I think. I was so excited, and surprised. I have loved the Willow Tree nativity set for so long, and I love how beautiful and simple they are. But, I also know how really expensive they are. When my mom asked me what I wanted for my b-day, I had told her that I needed new g.'s, so when the package was delivered to me, and it said Deseret, I assumed that's what they were (even though it really would've said Distribution Center). To my surprise this is what was inside. Thanks mom! I love them.

Pumpkin Carving/Painting

This year we decided to not only carve pumpkins, but to paint some as well. Kolby and Mallorie had their own to paint, and Jeremy and I carved a couple. Jeremy carved The Headless Horseman, and I carved a witch. They turned out pretty good, except that my witch's tooth fell off and I had to fix it with a toothpick. After we were done carving our pumpkins, we made pumpkin seeds. They were so good. Our friends, Dave and Jessica, gave us their pumpkin seed recipe, which you boil and then bake.

Pumpkin Patch

I love going to pumpkin patches! We first started going while we were in Arizona, when the kids were just little. My sister Kodi and I would take the kids up to Prescott, and we had so much fun that we made it a new tradition. The one in AZ had hay-rides, mazes, barn swings and slide, animals, little John Deer Tractor tricycles, and lots of delicious pumpkin goodies and treats. But, then they closed that one down. Since moving here a couple of years ago, we hadn't gone to one. I didn't know that we had any up here. So, I was very excited to learn from my friend Jill, that we had one here. It wasn't quite as grand, and it made me miss my sister and nephew, but it was still fun all the same. The kids loved it and I was able to take a few cute pictures. I love all of the fall colors.

It was my niece Aubrey's birthday on Oct. 29th, but I just haven't had any time lately, so this is a little late. Aubrey is such a beautiful girl, and I love her curly, curly hair. (I wish I had her hair) I can't believe how big she is getting. It seems like it was just the other day, that we were in MO for her blessing. We miss her so much, and hope to see her, and her new baby sister soon.

Crazy Hair Day

Here are a few pictures of Mallorie on Crazy Hair Day. (I'm a little behind on my posts.) Kolby didn't get to have a fun hairstyle because his hair was too short. He got a hold of the scissors just before the first day of school, and cut his hair to the scalp in a couple of places. It's just now finally starting to grow out. Mal's hair, however was fun. She is such a goof, and loves to have her picture taken now. I love the one of her making the funny face. She can be so quiet and shy in front of others, but that picture really shows her true colors.

My neice, Emmie just had her birthday on Friday. I can't believe she is six now. She lives in North Carolina, so we miss her very much. For her birthday party they took her and her friends to this place where they do makeovers on the girls and then take their pictures. It sounded like a lot of fun.
